History of the Mint Julep Recipe
The first mint julep recipe was created in the south and is still favored by many southerners today. It is a tradition that dates back to pre-civil war times and it has been the official beverage of the Kentucky Derby for many years. Undoubtedly, you will find the best renditions of this cocktail in the south, as citizens here take great pride in their mint juleps.
Although recipes vary, the general ingredients include bourbon, sugar, water, fresh mint, and ice. A mint syrup can be made by boiling the sugar and water together, then adding lots of fresh mint and refrigerating overnight. Pour the bourbon and about a tablespoon of the syrup over crushed ice in a sterling silver julep cup (thats right–it even has its own glassware!).
The mint is really what makes this drink special. Even if you cannot concoct the syrup to leave overnight, it is important to at least let the mint steep awhile to allow the flavor to come out. Crushing the leaves can also help release their flavor. You may have to experiment and try several before finding the mint julep recipe that suits your fancy, but at least youll have fun getting there!
